how do you unearth the history of flevoland?
The Erfgoedcentrum Nieuwland (New Land Heritage Centre) in Lelystad tells the story of the past of the Netherlands’ youngest province. It is not just about last century’s pioneers, but also about the hunters, Romans and robber barons who were here, a long, long time ago. Their fortresses, battledfields and ships can be found just below what used to be the bottom of the sea. Tinker was invited to develop a permanent exhibition for children about the unique archaeology of Flevoland.
In the middle of the new museum, excavations are underway. Remains from 50, 500 or 5000 years ago can still be found in the well. They are buried under a thick layer of sand, so this will taking some digging. A laboratory has been built over the well. In here, children get to research everything from the age of wood to a dead person’s name. Before long, they become archaeologists themselves in this interactive exhibition - without software, but with real Flevo-sand.
