mauritshuis opens new exhibition designed by tinker

13-09-2024

On 12 September, the Mauritshuis celebrated the festive opening of The Lost Museum exhibition. This unique display offers visitors a chance to re-experience the Royal Cabinet of Rarities, which was housed on the Mauritshuis’s ground floor between 1822 and 1875.

Curators Sheila Reda and Justine Rinnooy Kan, with support from the Rijksmuseum and the Wereldmuseum Leiden, have put together a fascinating collection of over 120 objects. From jewellery and weapons to exotic artefacts and artworks, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the rich history and unique story of this lost museum.

a modern design inspired by a classic cabinet
Tinker Imagineers has designed a contemporary take on the 19th-century cabinet of curiosities. This reimagined design brings the original atmosphere of the packed rooms back to life, while offering a modern perspective on collecting and displaying objects. Visitors can experience what it would have been like to walk among the Mauritshuis’s tightly clustered treasures, filled with objects that tell stories from around the world.

The Lost Museum will be open until 5 January 2025, providing not only a historical overview but also a critical reflection on how and why collections were assembled and the stories objects conveyed, both then and now.
