The DOMunder underground archaeological visitor experience at the Domplein in Utrecht has been named as the best international project at the UK’s Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence. Tinker imagineers, agency for creative consultancy and experience communication, received the award on behalf of the Domplein Foundation yesterday (April 29th) at the Historic State Rooms of 8 Northumberland Avenue in central London.

The experience is located in the historical heart of Utrecht and situated around the re-excavated archaeological remains of 2000 years’ worth of history. By going underground with an interactive torch, visitors take on the role of the archaeologist. They discover in an investigative way the remains that tell the stories of the Domplein square.

The judges said: “We loved the innovative and creative use of technology which was an intelligent solution to the challenge of interpreting archaeology, successfully creating a sense of place and bringing structural foundations to life!”

Now celebrating its thirteenth year, the annual Awards, created by The Museums + Heritage Show, recognise the leading lights of the heritage sector and celebrate excellence and innovation at museums, galleries and visitor attractions across the UK and Europe. The Museums + Heritage Show is the sector’s biggest trade event for museum and heritage/cultural visitor attraction professionals.

Tinker imagineers conceived and produced the visitor experience for the first permanent public excavation in The Netherlands. JDdV Architecten designed the architectural construction. The Domplein Foundation took the initiative for DOMunder, which opened in June 2014.
